Curry Village

History

Camp Curry was founded in 1899 by David Curry and Jenny Etta Foster, two school teachers from Indiana. Unable to afford the price of coach fare to the park and still pay for lodging ($4 per night at the time), the pair opened a tented camp so visitors could enjoy the beauty and grandeur of Yosemite at a modest price. The camp advertised “a good bed and clean napkin with every meal” for the modest price of $2 per night.

Originally comprised of a dozen tents and a common area for dining Camp Curry quickly became the center of Yosemite growing to hundreds of tents within a few short years.
